Smoothie bowls: The new cereal

As a child, I ate cereal. In high school, I ate cereal. In college, I ate cereal for two years. Then, in my Junior year of college, I attended a nutrition talk. The presenter concluded his segment on breakfast foods by bluntly saying, "Eating cereal is pointless. The majority of them are artificial. You can get your iron, fiber, protein, and other nutritional benefits that some cereals offer from other foods that are pure and whole." I've been afraid of cereal ever since. Well, "afraid" may be too strong of a word. Rather, I learned that artifcial parts of cereal outweigh the health benefits of cereal.

(Side note: This is the same talk where I was told, "... if you want to eat a sandwhich, eat half of it only. There is no nutritional benefit for two pieces of bread.")

That brings me to.... smoothie bowls!

(... and oatmeal! That will be another post.)

What is a smoothie bowl?

It is a smoothie, made extra thick, put in a bowl, with other foods added on top, and you eat it with a spoon. It is a smoothie, yes. At the same time, you feel like you are eating cereal. The best part? It is incredibly healthy.

There is something about having a bowl filled with liquid, bits of food, and eating it with a spoon. Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's a mental satisfaction for consuming my daily smoothie in a unique manner.

Whether you are a cereal lover, a smoothie lover, or just curious about healthy eating, I highly suggest trying a homemade smoothie bowl.

RECIPE:

  • 1 smoothie (made extra thick)

  • 3-4 various toppings

That's it!

VARIOUS TOPPINGS:

Below are some of my favorite health foods for satisfying (and filling) smoothie bowls:

  • Nuts (Almonds whole or shaved, walnuts, cashews)

  • Raw oats

  • Granola

  • Chopped strawberries

  • Chopped bananas

  • Blueberries

  • Coconut flakes

  • Cinnamon (sprinkled)

  • Cocoa nibs

  • Honey (drizzled, only if your smoothie bowl has low-sugar ingredients).

Tip: Add anything and everything that you would like to eat. If it tastes good with a smoothie, it's worth having on your smoothie bowl.

GRAB YOUR SPOON AND ENJOY!

With self-care passion,

Lindsay
